Artist’s Statement
Emotions are unruly, erratic, and restless. My work is an outlet for this energy—a release of emotions onto a page. I’m drawn to watercolors—the lack of control pays homage to the nature of emotional release, and also embodies freedom. That’s the beauty of it—watercolor is a rare place where lack of control is welcomed. I’m attracted to lack of control. Not chaos, exactly, but freedom. I leave control out of it in every way possible—I work with simple, natural materials: paper, water, paints. I keep my color palate close to the Earth and use glowing, natural colors. My work is about working with, and accepting what happens on the page. I keep it fluid and abstract, but always try to retain a recognizable figurative or still life element. Big blocks of vivid color interspersed with neutrals to express emotional states, and shifting moods."
